Safeguarding Training for Humanitarian Project Teams

On March 26, 2026, a practical safeguarding training was held in Kyiv for the teams of the project “Humanitarian Aid and Livelihood Restoration in War-Affected Territories of Ukraine” (Phase 2).

In Caritas Ukraine, the systematic implementation of safeguarding approaches is the foundation of quality and safe work with beneficiaries. This is not a separate direction, but an overarching principle that defines daily decisions, interaction with people, and the responsibility of every employee.

On March 26, 2026, a practical safeguarding training was held in Kyiv for the teams of the project “Humanitarian Aid and Livelihood Restoration in War-Affected Territories of Ukraine” (Phase 2). Representatives of local Caritas network organizations and the national office participated in the training. The training was organized as part of the implementation of this project, aimed at systematically strengthening the capacity of teams to work with protection risks and implement safeguarding principles in their daily activities.

The training focused not only on updating knowledge but primarily on its practical application: analyzing real cases, practicing action algorithms, and strengthening the ability to respond to complex situations when working with beneficiaries. Participants specifically reviewed the basic principles of the safeguarding system as an integral part of the organization’s activities, standards of conduct, integrity, and prevention of conflicts of interest, as well as mechanisms for reporting suspicions and violations. Special emphasis was placed on the fact that the safeguarding system covers all employees, partners, and beneficiaries – and operates constantly, in all areas of the organization’s activities.

The training format combined theoretical blocks with practical exercises: case analysis and discussion of participants’ experiences allowed for adapting the material to real challenges in their work. The training was conducted by safeguarding specialists – Safeguarding Project Manager Marta Yatsyshyn and Complaints Officer Maryna Herasymovych, who work on implementing the Safeguarding system within the Caritas Ukraine network.

Such trainings are critically important for ensuring trust in the organization and the quality of aid, because it is through the preparedness of teams that a safe space is created for people seeking support.
